7 EXCITING MOMENTS ABOUT YORUBA WEDDING

The Yoruba traditional wedding ceremony, also known as Yoruba Engagement Ceremony, or Igbeyawo in Yoruba Language is the same process everywhere.

There wedding ceremony has always been colourful and very festive, trust yoruba people to always turn a boring party to a lively one.

Categories of aso-ebi flies across everywhere, a variety of mouth-watering dishes is never missing and to dances to contemporary Nigerian music is very sure at a yoruba wedding.

In a Yoruba wedding there is no limit as to the type of items to be shared ranging from tooth pick, to cotton bud, indomie, matches, jotter, nail cutter, plastic hand fans and lots more.



Here are some of the things that happens at Yoruba wedding:

HOW IT ALL BEGAN: A proposal letter is presented to the bride's family and an acceptance letter is given to the groom's family.

 THE POPULAR ALAGA IDURO/IJOKO: The entire ceremony is orchestrated by two                     representatives, Alaga iduro or alaga Ijoko (traditional wedding coordinators) who are chosen             or hired by each side family.

TIME TO LIE FLAT ON THE FLOOR: The groom and his friends are expected to prostrate before the bride's parent and they receive acceptance and prayers.

BRING OUT THE BRIDE:  The bride is later been ushered out alongside her friends with melodious song for the bride.

LETS SEE OUR BRIDE FACE: The bride dances to where her in-laws are sitting and afterward she kneels before them, thereafter the in-laws opens her veil to confirm it its the right woman that is kneeling before them.

THE GROOM'S CAP:  The bride is given the groom's cap, she dances with it waving and flaunting it for people to see. She later kneels before her groom and wears the cap on his head.



THE ENGAGEMENT GIFTS (ERU IYAWO): Before the date of the engagement especially on the day of the introduction, the bride family gives the groom family a list containing the engagement materials to be brought on the engagement day. These gifts are beautifully wrapped, the list contains : Bitter kola, yams, alligator pepper (atare), dried fish (eja osan), peppered corn meal (aadun), sugar, friuts, honey, soft drinks, fruit wine, bag of salt, bag of rice, umbrella, she-goat, palmoil, suitcase containing new clothes, shoes and bag for the bride, Biscuits and sweet, Engagement ring, bible or quran. The monetary aspect of the gift include: Bride price (owo ori), money for elders consent(owo ijoko agba), money for bride's father's consent (owo baba gbo), money for the bride's other's consent (owo iya gbo), fee for unveiling the bride (owo isiju), money for housewives (owo iyawo ile), money for the children of the household(owo omo ile), letter reading fee (owo letter kika), engagement fee unveiling fee(owo isigba) and so on depending on the bride's family.



WHAT WILL THE BRIDE PICK: The bride is told to select one out of the many engagement gift (ERU IYAWO) brought by the groom's family. She is expected to pick the Bible or Quran depending on their religion .



THE RING: The Engagement Ring is also placed among the engagement items, the groom takes it and insert it in the brides forth finger. The bride is been told to flaunt the ring to her friends and family dancing.
